BACKGROUND: The therapeutic benefits of motor imagery (MI) are now well-established in different populations of persons suffering from central nervous system impairments. However, research on similar efficacy of MI interventions after amputation remains scarce, and experimental studies were primarily designed to explore the effects of MI after upper-limb amputations. OBJECTIVES: The present comparative study therefore aimed to assess the effects of MI on locomotion recovery following unilateral lower-limb amputation. METHODS: Nineteen participants were assigned either to a MI group (n = 9) or a control group (n = 10). In addition to the course of physical therapy, they respectively performed 10 min per day of locomotor MI training or neutral cognitive exercises, five days per week. Participants' locomotion functions were assessed through two functional tasks: 10 m walking and the Timed Up and Go Test. Force of the amputated limb and functional level score reflecting the required assistance for walking were also measured. Evaluations were scheduled at the arrival at the rehabilitation center (right after amputation), after prosthesis fitting (three weeks later), and at the end of the rehabilitation program. A retention test was also programed after 6 weeks. RESULTS: While there was no additional effect of MI on pain management, data revealed an early positive impact of MI for the 10 m walking task during the pre-prosthetic phase, and greater performance during the Timed Up and Go Test during the prosthetic phase. Also, a lower proportion of participants still needed a walking aid after MI training. Finally, the force of the amputated limb was greater at the end of rehabilitation for the MI group. CONCLUSION: Taken together, these data support the integration of MI within the course of physical therapy in persons suffering from lower-limb amputations.

Variations in muscular contraction are known to significantly impact the quality of the generated EMG signal and the output decision of a proposed classifier. This is an issue when the classifier is further implemented in prosthetic hand design. Therefore, this study aims to develop a deep learning classifier to improve the classification of hand motion gestures and investigate the effect of force variations on their accuracy on amputees. The contribution of this study showed that the resulting deep learning architecture based on DNN (deep neural network) could recognize the six gestures and robust against different force levels (18 combinations). Additionally, this study recommended several channels that most contribute to the classifier's accuracy. Also, the selected time domain features were used for a classifier to recognize 18 combinations of EMG signal patterns (6 gestures and three forces). The average accuracy of the proposed method (DNN) was also observed at 92.0 ± 6.1 %. Moreover, several other classifiers were used as comparisons, such as support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), K-nearest neighbors, and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). The increase in the mean accuracy of the proposed method compared to other conventional classifiers (SVM, DT, KNN, and LDA), was 17.86 %. Also, the study's implication stated that the proposed method should be applied to developing prosthetic hands for amputees that recognize multi-force gestures.

The primary goal of rehabilitation for individuals with lower limb amputation, particularly those with unilateral transfemoral amputation (uTFA), is to restore their ability to walk independently. Effective control of the center of pressure (COP) during gait is vital for maintaining balance and stability, yet it poses a significant challenge for individuals with uTFA. This study aims to study the COP during gait in individuals with uTFA and elucidate their unique compensatory strategies. This study involved 12 uTFA participants and age-matched non-disabled controls, with gait and COP trajectory data collected using an instrumented treadmill. Gait and COP parameters between the control limb (CL), prosthetic limb (PL), and intact limb (IL) were compared. Notably, the mediolateral displacement of COP in PL exhibited significant lateral displacement compared to the CL from 30% to 60% of the stance. In 20% to 45% of the stance, the COP forward speed of PL was significantly higher than that of the IL. Furthermore, during the initial 20% of the stance, the vertical ground reaction force of PL was significantly lower than that of IL. Additionally, individuals with uTFA exhibited a distinct gait pattern with altered duration of loading response, single limb support, pre-swing and swing phases, and step time. These findings indicate the adaptability of individuals with uTFA in weight transfer, balance control, and pressure distribution on gait stability. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the unique gait dynamics and balance strategies of uTFA patients, highlighting the importance of optimizing prosthetic design, alignment procedures, and rehabilitation programs to enhance gait patterns and reduce the risk of injuries due to compensatory movements.

BACKGROUND: Persons with a transfemoral amputation (TFA) often experience difficulties in daily-life ambulation, including an asymmetrical and less stable gait pattern and a greater cognitive demand of walking. However, it remains unclear whether this is effected by the prosthetic suspension, as eliminating the non-rigid prosthetic connection may influence stability and cortical activity during walking. Spatiotemporal and stability-related gait parameters, as well as cortical activity during walking, were evaluated between highly active individuals (MFC-level K3-4) with a TFA and able-bodied (AB) persons, and between persons with a bone-anchored prosthesis (BAP) and those with a socket-suspended prosthesis (SSP). METHODS: 18 AB persons and 20 persons with a unilateral TFA (10 BAP-users, 10 SSP-users) walked on a treadmill at their preferred speed. Spatiotemporal and margin of stability parameters were extracted from three-dimensional movement recordings. In addition, 126-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded. Brain-related activity from several cortical areas was isolated using independent component analysis. Source-level data were divided into gait cycles and subjected to time-frequency analysis to determine gait-cycle dependent modulations of cortical activity. RESULTS: Persons with TFA walked with smaller and wider steps and with greater variability in mediolateral foot placement than AB subjects; no significant differences were found between BAP- and SSP-users. The EEG analysis yielded four cortical clusters in frontal, central (both hemispheres), and parietal areas. No statistically significant between-group differences were found in the mean power over the entire gait cycle. The event-related spectral perturbation maps revealed differences in power modulations (theta, alpha, and beta bands) between TFA and AB groups, and between BAP- and SSP-users, with largest differences observed around heel strike of either leg. CONCLUSIONS: The anticipated differences in gait parameters in persons with TFA were confirmed, however no significant effect of the fixed suspension of a BAP was found. The preliminary EEG findings may indicate more active monitoring and control of stability in persons with TFA, which appeared to be timed differently in SSP than in BAP-users. Future studies may focus on walking tasks that challenge stability to further investigate differences related to prosthetic suspension.

The use of an agonist-antagonist muscle pair for myoelectric control of a transtibial prosthesis requires normalizing the myoelectric signals and identifying their co-contraction signature. Extensive literature has explored the relationship between body posture and lower-limb muscle activation level using surface electromyography (EMG), but it is unknown how these relationships hold after amputation. Using a virtual tracking task, this study compares the effect of three different calibration postures (seated, standing, dynamic) on user tracking ability while in two tracking postures (seated, standing) for 18 able-bodied (AB) subjects and 9 subjects with transtibial (TT) amputation. As expected, AB subjects produced statistically significant differences in muscle activation for gastrocnemius (GAS) when seated vs. standing during calibration (p = 8.8e-4), but not for tibialis anterior (TA) (p = 0.76). TT subjects, however, showed no significant differences in GAS or TA between seated and standing (p = 0.90, 0.60 respectively). It was also determined that normalizing EMG by the global maximum signal observed (standard in biomechanic analysis) is undesirable for myoelectric control. For best general results with this framework, calibration in both seated and dynamic postures is recommended, taking the normalization information from the seated posture and the narrowest co-contraction slopes from the two.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is more prevalent in patients with transfemoral amputation using socket prostheses than able-bodied individuals, in part due to altered spinal loading caused by aberrant lumbopelvic movement patterns. Early evidence surrounding bone-anchored limb functional outcomes is promising, yet it remains unknown if this novel prosthesis influences LBP or movement patterns known to increase its risk. RESEARCH QUESTION: How are self-reported measures of LBP and lumbopelvic movement coordination patterns altered when using a unilateral transfemoral bone-anchored limb compared to a socket prosthesis? METHODS: Fourteen patients with unilateral transfemoral amputation scheduled to undergo intramedullary hardware implantation for bone-anchored limbs due to failed socket use were enrolled in this longitudinal observational cohort study (7 F/7 M, Age: 50.2±12.0 years). The modified Oswestry Disability Index (mODI) (self-reported questionnaire) and whole-body motion capture during overground walking were collected before (with socket prosthesis) and 12-months following bone-anchored limb implantation. Lumbopelvic total range of motion (ROM) and continuous relative phase (CRP) segment angles were calculated during 10 bilateral gait cycles. mODI, total ROM, CRP and CRP variabilities were compared between time points. RESULTS: mODI scores were significantly reduced 12-months after intramedullary hardware implantation for the bone-anchored limb (P = 0.013). Sagittal plane trunk and pelvis total ROM during gait were reduced after implantation (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). CRP values were increased (more anti-phase) in the sagittal plane during single limb stance and reduced (more in-phase) in the transverse plane during pre-swing of the amputated limb gait cycle (P << 0.001 and P = 0.029, respectively). No differences in CRP values were found in the frontal plane. SIGNIFICANCE: Decreases in mODI scores and lumbopelvic ROM, paired with the changes in lumbopelvic coordination, indicate that bone-anchored limbs may reduce LBP symptoms and reduce compensatory movement patterns for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation.

PURPOSE: Combined targeted muscle reinnervation with regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces ("TMRpni") is a recently described nerve management strategy that leverages beneficial elements of targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and regenerative peripheral nerve interface (RPNI) techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of TMRpni on long-term opioid consumption after amputation. We hypothesize that TMRpni decreases chronic opioid consumption in amputees. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent TMRpni between 2019 and 2021. These patients were age-matched at a 1:1 ratio with a control group of patients who underwent amputation without TMRpni. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Version 28.0. RESULTS: Thirty-one age-matched pairs of patients in the TMRpni and control groups were included. At 30 days after surgery, there was no significant difference in number of patients who required an additional refill of their opioid prescriptions (45% vs 55%, P = 0.45) or patients who continued to actively use opioids (36% vs 42%, P = 0.60). However, at 90 days after surgery, there was a significantly lower number of patients from the TMRpni group who reported continued opioid use compared with the control group (10% vs 32%, P = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates that TMRpni may translate to decreased rates of chronic opiate use. Continued study is indicated to optimize TMRpni techniques and patient selection and to determine its long-term efficacy.

Reducing energy consumption during walking is a critical goal for transtibial amputees. The study presents the evaluation of a semi-active prosthesis with five transtibial amputees. The prosthesis has a low-power actuator integrated in parallel into an energy-storing-and-releasing foot. The actuator is controlled to compress the foot during the stance phase, supplementing the natural compression due to the user's dynamic interaction with the ground, particularly during the ankle dorsiflexion phase, and to release the energy stored in the foot during the push-off phase, to enhance propulsion. The control strategy is adaptive to the user's gait patterns and speed. The clinical protocol to evaluate the system included treadmill and overground walking tasks. The results showed that walking with the semi-active prosthesis reduced the Physiological Cost Index of transtibial amputees by up to 16% compared to walking using the subjects' proprietary prosthesis. No significant alterations were observed in the spatiotemporal gait parameters of the participants, indicating the module's compatibility with users' natural walking patterns. These findings highlight the potential of the mechatronic actuator in effectively reducing energy expenditure during walking for transtibial amputees. The proposed prosthesis may bring a positive impact on the quality of life, mobility, and functional performance of individuals with transtibial amputation.

The study aims to construct an inertial measuring system for the application of amputee subjects wearing a prosthesis. A new computation scheme to process inertial data by installing seven wireless inertial sensors on the lower limbs was implemented and validated by comparing it with an optical motion capture system. We applied this system to amputees to verify its performance for gait analysis. The gait parameters are evaluated to objectively assess the amputees' prosthesis-wearing status. The Madgwick algorithm was used in the study to correct the angular velocity deviation using acceleration data and convert it to quaternion. Further, the zero-velocity update method was applied to reconstruct patients' walking trajectories. The combination of computed walking trajectory with pelvic and lower limb joint motion enables sketching the details of motion via a stickman that helps visualize and animate the walk and gait of a test subject. Five participants with above-knee (n = 2) and below-knee (n = 3) amputations were recruited for gait analysis. Kinematic parameters were evaluated during a walking test to assess joint alignment and overall gait characteristics. Our findings support the feasibility of employing simple algorithms to achieve accurate and precise joint angle estimation and gait parameters based on wireless inertial sensor data.

BACKGROUND: Lower limb amputation contributes to structural and functional brain alterations, adversely affecting gait, balance, and overall quality of life. Therefore, selecting an appropriate prosthetic ankle is critical in enhancing the well-being of these individuals. Despite the availability of various prostheses, their impact on brain neuroplasticity remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective is to examine differences in the degree of brain neuroplasticity using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between individuals wearing a new passive ankle prosthesis with an articulated ankle joint and a standard passive prosthesis, and to examine changes in brain neuroplasticity within these two prosthetic groups. The second objective is to investigate the influence of prosthetic type on walking performance and quality of life. The final objective is to determine whether the type of prosthesis induces differences in the walking movement pattern. METHODS: Participants with a unilateral transtibial amputation will follow a 24-week protocol. Prior to rehabilitation, baseline MRI scans will be performed, followed by allocation to the intervention arms and commencement of rehabilitation. After 12 weeks, baseline functional performance tests and a quality of life questionnaire will be administered. At the end of the 24-week period, participants will undergo the same MRI scans, functional performance tests and questionnaire to evaluate any changes. A control group of able-bodied individuals will be included for comparative analysis. CONCLUSION: This study aims to unravel the differences in brain neuroplasticity and prosthesis type in patients with a unilateral transtibial amputation and provide insights into the therapeutic benefits of prosthetic devices. The findings could validate the therapeutic benefits of more advanced lower limb prostheses, potentially leading to a societal impact ultimately improving the quality of life for individuals with lower limb amputation. BACKGROUND: There are many consequences of lower limb amputation, including altered biomechanics of gait. It has previously been shown that these can lead to increased rates of osteoarthritis (OA). A common and successful treatment for severe OA is joint replacement. However, it is unclear whether amputees undergoing this surgery can expect the same outcomes or complication profile compared with non-amputees. Furthermore, there are key technical challenges associated with hip or knee replacement in lower limb amputees. This scoping review aimed to identify and summarise the existing evidence base. METHODS: This was a systematic scoping review performed according to PRISMA guidelines. An electronic database search of MEDLINE (PubMed), Cochrane Library, EMBASE and CINAHL was completed from the date of inception to 1st April 2023. All peer reviewed literature related to hip or knee replacement among lower limb amputees was included. RESULTS: Of the 931 records identified, 40 studies were included in this study. The available literature consisted primarily of case reports and case series, with generally low level of evidence. In total, there were 265 patients of which 195 received total hip replacement (THR), 51 received total knee replacement (TKR) and 21 received hip hemiarthroplasty. The most common reason for amputation was trauma (34.2%), and the main indication for joint replacement was OA (77.1%), occurring more frequently in the contralateral limb (66.7%). The outcomes reported varied widely between studies, with most suggesting good functional status post-operatively. A variety of technical tips were reported, primarily concerned with intra-operative control of the residual limb. CONCLUSION: There is a need for more observational studies to clearly define the association between amputation and subsequent need for joint replacement. Furthermore, comparative studies are needed to identify whether amputees can be expected to achieve similar functional outcomes after surgery, and if they are at higher risk of certain complications.

This short communication presents the gait1415+2 musculoskeletal model, that has been developed in OpenSim to describe the lower-extremity of a human subject with transfemoral amputation wearing a generic lower-limb bone-anchored prosthesis. The model has fourteen degrees of freedom, governed by fifteen musculotendon units (placed at the contralateral and residual limbs) and two generic actuators (one placed at the knee joint and one at the ankle joint of the prosthetic leg). Even though the model is a simplified abstraction, it is capable of generating a human-like walking gait and, specifically, it is capable of reproducing both the kinematics and the dynamics of a person with transfemoral amputation wearing a bone-anchored prosthesis during normal level-ground walking. The model is released as support material to this short communication with the final goal of providing the scientific community with a tool for performing forward and inverse dynamics simulations, and for developing computationally-demanding control schemes based on artificial intelligence methods for lower-limb prostheses.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG)-based gesture recognition has emerged as a promising avenue for developing intelligent prostheses for upper limb amputees. However, the temporal variations in sEMG have rendered recognition models less efficient than anticipated. By using cross-session calibration and increasing the amount of training data, it is possible to reduce these variations. The impact of varying the amount of calibration and training data on gesture recognition performance for amputees is still unknown. To assess these effects, we present four datasets for the evaluation of calibration data and examine the impact of the amount of training data on benchmark performance. Two amputees who had undergone amputations years prior were recruited, and seven sessions of data were collected for analysis from each of them. Ninapro DB6, a publicly available database containing data from ten healthy subjects across ten sessions, was also included in this study. The experimental results show that the calibration data improved the average accuracy by 3.03%, 6.16%, and 9.73% for the two subjects and Ninapro DB6, respectively, compared to the baseline results. Moreover, it was discovered that increasing the number of training sessions was more effective in improving accuracy than increasing the number of trials. Three potential strategies are proposed in light of these findings to enhance cross-session models further. We consider these findings to be of the utmost importance for the commercialization of intelligent prostheses, as they demonstrate the criticality of gathering calibration and cross-session training data, while also offering effective strategies to maximize the utilization of the entire dataset.

Percutaneous osseointegrated implants for individuals with lower limb amputation can increase mobility, reduce socket related pain, and improve quality of life. It would be useful to have an evaluation method to assess the interface between bone and implant. We assessed outpatient radiographs from the Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis clinical trial using an interface scoring system which summed and weighted equally measures of implant collar cortical ongrowth and radiolucency along the implant stem/bone interface. Radiographs from 12 participants with unilateral transfemoral amputations (10 males, 2 females, mean age = 43.2, SD = 7.4 years) in the clinical trial from cohort I (implanted in 2008/09) or cohort II (implanted in 2013/14) were collated (mean image span = 7.2, SD = 2.4 years), scale normalised, zoned, and measured in a repeatable way. Interface scores were calculated and then compared to clinical outcomes. Explanted participants received the lowest interface scores. A higher ratio of stem to residuum and shorter residuum's produced better interface scores and there was an association (weak correlation) between participants with thin cortices and the lowest interface scores. A tapered, cemented, non curved stem may provide advantageous fixation while stem alignment did not appear critical. In summary, the interface score successfully demonstrated a non-invasive evaluation of percutaneous osseointegrated implants interfaces when applied to the Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis clinical trial. The clinical significance of this work is to identify events leading to aseptic or septic implant removal and contribute to clinical guidelines for monitoring rehabilitation, design and surgical fixation choices.

Commercial, high-tech upper limb prostheses offer a lot of functionality and are equipped with high-grade control mechanisms. However, they are relatively expensive and are not accessible to the majority of amputees. Therefore, more affordable, accessible, open-source, and 3D-printable alternatives are being developed. A commonly proposed approach to control these prostheses is to use bio-potentials generated by skeletal muscles, which can be measured using surface electromyography (sEMG). However, this control mechanism either lacks accuracy when a single sEMG sensor is used or involves the use of wires to connect to an array of multiple nodes, which hinders patients' movements. In order to mitigate these issues, we have developed a circular, wireless s-EMG array that is able to collect sEMG potentials on an array of electrodes that can be spread (not) uniformly around the circumference of a patient's arm. The modular sEMG system is combined with a Bluetooth Low Energy System on Chip, motion sensors, and a battery. We have benchmarked this system with a commercial, wired, state-of-the-art alternative and found an r = 0.98 (p < 0.01) Spearman correlation between the root-mean-squared (RMS) amplitude of sEMG measurements measured by both devices for the same set of 20 reference gestures, demonstrating that the system is accurate in measuring sEMG. Additionally, we have demonstrated that the RMS amplitudes of sEMG measurements between the different nodes within the array are uncorrelated, indicating that they contain independent information that can be used for higher accuracy in gesture recognition. We show this by training a random forest classifier that can distinguish between 6 gestures with an accuracy of 97%. This work is important for a large and growing group of amputees whose quality of life could be improved using this technology.

A well-fitting socket and a fine-tuned foot alignment are crucial elements in a running-specific prosthesis to allow Paralympic athletes with below-knee amputation to express their full competitive potential. For this reason, once a satisfactory socket-foot configuration is established after dynamic alignment, it is fundamental to reproduce the same conditions when constructing the definitive carbon fiber socket, and when renewing or constructing a back-up prosthesis, without dismantling the original. In addition, to cope with emerging needs of the athlete, it would be beneficial to implement fine-tuning adjustments of the alignment in a very controlled manner. At present, this requires elaborate bench procedures, which tend to be expensive, time consuming, prone to manual errors, cumbersome in use and most often require damaging or disposing of the current socket. In this study, we propose an original CAD/CAM workflow that allows replicating the desired socket-foot configuration for below-knee sprinting prostheses, as well as performing socket adaptations and introducing fine-tuning adjustments to the alignments. The workflow is exemplified with reference to two case studies involving elite Paralympic runners with transtibial and partial foot amputations, respectively.

This proof of concept study presents a method to collect and analyse kinetic data from one participant with a transfemoral amputation fitted with a percutaneous osseointegrated implant walking on a level and sloped treadmill. We describe the construction of and results from a bespoke wireless six axis load cell built into one participant's prosthetic assembly. The load cell does not clinically compromise the participant in any way and is an initial milestone in the development of a light-weight wireless load cell for use with percutaneous osseointegrated implants. In this case, it is the first time that kinetic data from a participant fitted with an Intraosseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis has been published. We propose that the data can be used to model the load transfer to the host bone, with several clinically significant applications. The raw dynamic data are made available and quasi-static load cases for each functional phase of gait are presented. Peak forces obtained in the medio-lateral (X), cranio-caudal (Y) and antero-posterior (Z) axes over level ground respectively were -243.8 N (0.24 BW), 1321.5 N (1.31 BW) and -421.8 N (0.42 BW); uphill were -141.0 N (0.14 BW), 1604.2 N (1.59 BW), -498.1 N (0.49 BW); downhill were -206.0 N (0.20 BW), 1103.9 N (1.09 BW), -547.2 N (0.54 BW). The kinetics broadly followed able bodied gait patterns with some gait strategies consistent in participants with other implant designs or prosthetic socket connections, for example offloading the artificial limb downhill.

BACKGROUND: Persons who undergo unilateral transtibial amputation are at an increased risk of secondary musculoskeletal joint pain and degeneration, which has been linked to excessive loading rates of the intact-side limb. Tibial axial acceleration, a feasible measure of loading rates with wearable sensors, would be clinically useful to relate to joint pain in persons with unilateral transtibial amputation. RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the relationship between peak tibial axial accelerations and intact-side joint pain in persons with unilateral transtibial amputation during walking? METHODS: Persons with unilateral transtibial amputation (n = 51) were separated into two groups based on the presence of intact-side limb pain (with pain: n = 16; without pain: n = 35). Tibial axial accelerations were measured with bilateral shank-mounted IMUs while participants completed three 10-meter walk tests. Peak tibial axial accelerations for each limb and between-limb symmetry were compared between groups using analysis of co-variance; significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Between persons with vs. without intact-side limb pain, peak tibial axial accelerations were smaller on the prosthetic side (0.64 vs. 0.81 g; p = 0.04), similar on the intact side (0.82 vs. 0.79 g; p = 0.53), and more asymmetrical between sides (intact > prosthetic) (0.81 vs. 1.03 g; p = 0.01). SIGNIFICANCE: Symmetry in peak tibial axial acceleration can assist with identifying preferential limb loading during walking and, with future research, could serve as a useful clinical target for intact-side limb unloading strategies to help mitigate secondary musculoskeletal pain in persons with unilateral transtibial amputation.

This study focuses on novel design and evaluation of Elastic 50A (EL50) mechanical metamaterials with open-cell patterns for its potential application to lower limb residuum/socket interfaces, specifically that of a transtibial (TT) amputee. Mechanical characteristics, that is, effective Young's modulus (E), was tuned by altering metamaterial porosity, which was experimentally verified. Specifically, pore radius of the unit cell was varied to achieve a range of E-values (0.05-1.71 MPa) for these 3D printed metamaterials. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted to evaluate pressure distribution across key load-bearing anatomical sites of a TT residuum. Using designed metamaterials for homogeneous liners, pressure profiles were studied and compared with a silicone liner case. Additionally, a custom metamaterial liner was designed by assigning appropriate metamaterials to four load-sensitive and tolerant anatomical sites of the TT residuum. The results suggest that lowest pressure variation (PV), as a measure of pressure distribution levels and potential comfort for amputees, was achieved by the custom metamaterial liner compared to any of the homogeneous liners included in this study. It is envisaged that this work may aid future design and development of custom liners using now commonly available 3D printing technologies and available elastomer materials to maximise comfort, tissue safety and overall rehabilitation outcomes for lower limb amputees.
